The first group of NFL hopefuls made their way to Indianapolis this morning for the NFL’s annual scouting combine. This group consisted of quarterbacks, tight ends, and wide receivers. Today they just went through their measurements, but as always there is news to report out of Indy.
Tua Tagovailoa measured in at 6’0″ and 217 pounds. Those numbers are good enough for the NFL, but the important part of his week will be the medical exam after suffering a brutal hip injury this past fall. If Tua’s medicals check out he is a lock for a top five selection come April.
Jake Fromm measured in with sub 9″ hands. 9″ is the threshold used by the NFL as the minimum needed for a quarterback. Fromm has many limitations and this will only force scouts to look into those concerns more and more.
Jordan Love measured in extremely well with 10.5″ hands and a solid 6’3 6/8″ and 224 pounds.
Justin Herbert has put on nine pounds since the senior bowl and is up to 236. That is good for him because his frame looked very lean in Mobile. He has the frame to carry 245 easy.
Brian Lewerke is not a notable prospect but he’s got some fucking mitts on him with 10 5/8″ hands.
Both of the Bryant’s, Hunter and Harrison, weighed in about 10 pounds heavier than expected which is great for them. They should both be day two picks and I suspect they will test very well.
Cole Kmet is huge. The former Notre Dame tight end measured in at 6’6 and over 260 pounds. Scouts have voiced a lot of concern over his tape recently but if he tests well this week he can put his name back on top of the tight end rankings.
Adam Trautman from Dayton has soared up boards recently and he has prototype measurables at 6’5″ and 255. He is a nimble route runner and great after the catch. Trautman may be the best tight end in the class and I expect him to test well this week.
Chase Claypool may need to re-classify his position. He weighed in at 238 today. Teams are going to start looking at him as more of a “move” tight end (slot/H-back).
Jerry Jeudy and CeeDee Lamb measured in almost identical which is wild considering their play styles are so different. Expect Jeudy to outshine Lamb in athletic testing this week and cement his status as WR1.
Henry Ruggs III came in at just under 5’11” and 188 pounds. That confirms the Tyreek Hill comps even more. Now everyone is just waiting for what that third digit on the stopwatch will be. 4.2something.
K.J. Hamler is dropping like a brick down draft boards. First, there are concerns about his hands, and now he came in under 5’9″ and under 180 pounds. Hamler better go sub 4.3 if he wants to lock himself in as a day two pick.
There needs to be a conversation about Antonio Gibson. He measured in at around 6’0″ and 225 pounds. Almost identical to Leviska Shenault. He is a very similar weapon too. I really don’t think there is much of a drop off between the two players myself. It will be interesting to see how similar they test week.
I’ll have another article tomorrow detailing all the latest news out of Indy.
