The women’s championship of the Australian Open is all set. Like many of the previous Australian Open finals, this matchup features two pre tournament long shots. Gabrine Muguruza pulled off an upset to reach the final. Not long after, Sofia Kenin did just the same.
Gabrine Muguruza’s Road to the Final
The Spaniard crawled her way into the tournament as an unseeded, ill struck competitor. From her first match, it has been a battle. Gabrine is looking to pull off something no man or woman has done in the Open Era. Muguruza lost her first set of the Australian Open 0-6. Nobody has won a Grand Slam title after doing such. After the early rounds Gabrine had to battle against the 5th, 9th, 30th, and finally the 4th ranked Halep. If Muguruza wins, she will also have a unique way of winning her first three Grand Slam titles. She has the French on clay, the Wimbledon on grass, and looking for the hard court at the Australian Open.
About Sofia Kenin
The young American is looking to join the fellow USA dominators of the tennis world. In the past two decades, Sloane Stephens, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams have all taken the title. As some may feel pressure in the moment, Kenin is expecting and thrives in it. The moment the young tennis prodigy has been waiting for is finally here. Her draw may not have as many top ranked opponents, but she has had to battle through her share of adversity none the less. In her semi-final match up she took out the world number one Barty.
Head to Head
These two have only faced each other once in their careers, during the China Open in 2019. Kenin walked away with a 3 set win 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. This matchup is up in the air, especially with the wild variance of the scores the only time they have played. Sportsbooks currently have Muguruza at -175 and Kenin at +143.
